...about kapua
Kapua is the family home business of Donn and Nece DeShayne. We have lived in Hawaii for 36 years, mostly on Maui. We have been decorating clothes with tropical flowers for 30 years but recently we decided to make clothes for Hawaiian women, because of hula, sports, keiki activities and living amongst the local community. We have 4 children from ages 14 to 31.
Donn is the artist. He photographs & illustrates flowers for the designs. After drawing the lei he scans in the picture to the computer for layout and separation to make the screens for printing. He runs the backporch screenprint studio where our shirts are printed. Nece is the sales department and fashion consultant. It is her love and involvement with Hawaiian culture that drives the enterprise. You will meet her at most of the fairs and craft events that we go to. She has been dancing hula for over 20 years. Some of her teachers have been Pua & Nalani Kanakaole, Nina Maxwell, Tisa Kalili, Kealii Reichel and she's still with Uluwehi Guerrero. Shen is our oldest son. He was our mainstay in the screen print studio, working hard, teaching others and managing the work flow. However he went off to U. of Hawaii but helps out during the summer. Ajja is our oldest. She is a Dance graduate from Chapman University in California. She has lived in Slovenia doing Christian Mission work. She is teaching gymnastics and not doing anything with the business but provides inspiration so how could we leave her out.
Daly is a freshman at Baldwin High School. He is a cheerful helper with odd jobs and printing.
Deme is 8 and in 3rd grade. She helps us by forcing us to take breaks and put things into perspective.
